Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS)

The Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS) is a national system that separates the country in six multistate divisions to aid government efforts at each level to share information, utilize analytical services, availability of specialized equipment, funding, etc. The regional sects use a secure intranet to improve communication between agencies or departments that otherwise may not work together due to jurisdiction issues.

On 25 February 2005, the FBI announced that the Bureau will extend the National Information Sharing Strategy (NISS) and launch the first Regional Data Exchange (R-DEx) in St. Louis, MO. R-DEx is the first of many programs to be implemented under the Department of Justice’s Law Enforcement Information Sharing Program (LEISP). R-DEx will provide state, local, and tribal law enforcement with appropriate access to federal investigative and intelligence data.
